How to Cure Ear Infections Naturally and Quickly

bigstock-Baby-With-Ear-Ache-8931670

Some time over the winter months, your child might contract an ear infection and be in pain.  Depending on your child’s age, he or she might tug at their ears, cry out in pain, have red ears or be old enough to verbally share their pain with you.  There is no need to panic! In this blog post, I will share the causes and natural treatments for ear infections in your child.

What causes ear infections?

Mucus forming, inflammatory foods or foods to which your child is sensitive or allergic, all increase fluid in the ear by creating nasal congestion.  The fluid from the back of the nasal passages should move easily to the ear but when there is enough congestion, it gets blocked and the fluid sits in the ear.  Bacteria then starts to multiply and ear pain and fever eventually occurs.  Children under the age of 6 are most susceptible to these infections because their Eustachian tubes are more horizontal than those of older children and adults, making drainage of fluids more difficult.  The flu or other bacterial infestation can also lead to an ear infection.

When common allergens (dairy, wheat, sugar and refined carbohydrates, peanuts, corn and eggs) are avoided, more times than not, the amount of fluid in the ears decreases significantly, infection heals and hearing improves.

What is a fast-acting natural remedy for healing ear infections?

Mix a couple of drops of olive oil with some pureed garlic (the size of a pea) and put it in your child’s ear, securing it with a little bit of cotton. This anti-inflammatory solution penetrates the eardrum, settles the pain, kills infection and works really well overnight. Remember, garlic is a natural antibiotic!

Are antibiotics necessary for ear infections?

Antibiotics deplete the body of good bacteria and increase the amount of yeast in the body and can, therefore, cause further ear infections as well as other health challenges.  If your child does take antibiotics, probiotics should be given to him or her at the same time and for at least two weeks after the course of antibiotics ends, in order to put the good bacteria back into your child’s body.  If antibiotics are prescribed, try using colloidal silver first, a natural antibiotic that comes in a liquid, tastes like water and can be taken on a spoon or put directly into the ear.

“Infants and children who are frequently prescribed antibiotics for middle-ear infections have been noted to have a much higher incidence of both hyperactivity and autism.” Dr. Zoltan Rona, Childhood Illness and The Allergy Connection

i just stick the whole garlic clove right in the ear for 20 minutes. Works everytime!

That’s wonderful that the whole garlic clove works for you! Usually a carrier, such as olive oil, carries the garlic into the interior of the ear and helps the garlic work more effectively.

Nice article on ear infections- the most common reason for infants and children to visit a physician and be prescribed their first antibiotic.
After over 30 years serving families as a chiropractor, I’d like to offer an additional perspective on this health challenge. Verterbral Subluxation Complex. This term, coined by the chiropractic profession decribes a disturbance or interference in the optimal communication within a child’s central nervous system. When a spinal bone (vertrebra) is not in proper relationship within the spinal complex…subluxation is the result. Subluxation is an ‘alteration of the quality of the nerve impulse’ going out to or returning from the tissues. The result is ‘functional disorder’. If this condition is happening in the upper neck area, (think birth trauma)’ a common result is less than optimal drainage of the middle ear contributing to the ’cause’ of the symptoms your article describes.
As we can all appreciate ‘subluxation’ disturbance is an ‘out of the box’ consideration. In fact, chiropractic, in the context of pediatric care is a purely vitalistic approach to a child’s core health and well being.
This paradigm’s prerequisite means we need to adopt a core belief in the spinal system’s value and importance. Each child’s nervous system and spinal development must be monitored regularly as they emerge from the womb and enter their unique growth process. It is generally accepted that birth to five years is the most pivotal time because of the tremendous rate of both spinal growth and immense changes each child must navigate.

I agree with everything you say, Bob and am a huge proponent of chiropractic care for children, as discussed at length in my book. Thank you so much for sharing. I assume you work with children?
